Crippen Publications
Hi Folks
My name is Dave Lupton aka Crippen Disabled Cartoonist. For most of my life I've created cartoons with a disability related theme under the nom de plume of ‘Crippen – disabled cartoonist’.
The name itself was intended as a play on words; 'crip' being short for cripple and 'pen' being the instrument I use to draw my cartoons with.
The Crippen platform has proved to be extremely successful in focussing people's minds on the real disability related issues.
My Story
Having been introduced to the Social Model understanding of disability back in the early 1970’s - that we are disabled by the barriers within society that stop us from enjoying a full and equal participation - I determined that I would base all my work as a disabled cartoonist on this concept.
As Crippen, I have been able to create an accurate portrayal of disability and in a format that other disabled people can relate to. Formerly any disability related cartoons were created by non-disabled cartoonists who perpetuated the stereotypes of disability and spoke to the prejudices of non-disabled people, confirming for them that we are something apart from 'normal' society.
Most of my work is now created for the internet, either as an illustration to a web-based article or blog, or as part of an eBook publication. Crippen books are now available only on his web site - www.crippencartoons.com
